The Animal Welfare Act of 1966 (AWA), found at 7 U.S.C. Chapter 54, is the primary federal law in the United States that regulates the treatment of animals in research, exhibition, transport, and by dealers. It is enforced by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). The AWA aims to ensure that animals used in these capacities are provided humane care and treatment. It sets minimum standards for handling, housing, feeding, sanitation, ventilation, shelter from extremes of weather, and veterinary care for covered animals.
