Federal Law
47. Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act

The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act is a U.S. federal law enacted in 1970 that provides for extended criminal penalties and a civil cause of action for acts performed as part of an ongoing criminal enterprise. The law is codified at 18 U.S.C. Chapter 96. RICO was originally intended to combat organized crime (like the Mafia) but has since been applied more broadly.
