Federal Law
38. Immigration and Nationality Act

The Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), originally passed in 1952 and found in Title 8 of the U.S. Code, is the fundamental body of U.S. immigration law. It has been amended many times, but it remains the primary statute governing who may enter the United States, how long they may stay, and what status they may hold. It also sets forth the process for becoming a U.S. citizen.
