20. Endangered Species Act
The Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973, codified at 16 U.S.C. Chapter 35, is one of the world's most powerful environmental laws. It provides a comprehensive program for the conservation of threatened and endangered plants and animals and the habitats in which they are found. The law is administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).
